A Letter From Your Dog: What I Wish You Knew

A Letter From Your Dog: What I Wish You Knew

Hi, human.
It’s me—your dog. I know I can’t speak your language (well, not in words), but I’ve got a few things I wish I could tell you. So today, I’m writing you a letter.

Dear Human,

First of all… thank you.
You chose me. Out of all the dogs in the world, you brought me into your home and made me part of your pack. That means everything to me.

When I wag my tail so hard that my whole body wiggles? That’s not just excitement. That’s love. I’m happy because you’re here, and for me, that’s all that matters.

I notice when you’re sad.
When your energy changes, I feel it too. If I come lay my head on your lap or nudge your hand with my nose, it’s my way of saying: “I’m here. We’re okay. I’ve got you.”

I don’t care how you look, what car you drive, or what job you have. I love your voice, your smell, and your presence. You are my world.

Sometimes I get scared when you're gone.
I don’t know how time works the way you do. One hour feels like forever to me. That’s why I go wild when you come back—every return feels like a miracle.

Please be patient when I don’t understand.
If I chew your shoe or bark too much, it’s not because I want to be bad. Maybe I’m bored. Maybe I’m anxious. Maybe I just don’t know any better yet. Help me learn. Teach me with kindness. I want to please you more than anything.

Take more pictures of us.
Someday, they’ll mean more to you than you realize.

And finally, when I’m older and slower, when my muzzle turns grey and I sleep a little more than I used to—please remember I’m still your pup. I’ll always be your pup. Be with me at the end like you were at the beginning. That’s all I ask.

I may only be a part of your life.
But to me, you are my whole life.

With a full heart and four paws,
Your Dog

P.S. If this post made you smile (or cry a little), go hug your dog. They’ve been waiting for you to finish reading 🐾
